A therapy practice runs on something different: a treatment relationship documented session by session, with a treatment plan, outcome measures and a level of confidentiality that goes beyond ordinary medical privacy. That shows up in four ways.

Clinical documentation. Therapists write SOAP, DAP, BIRP or GIRP progress notes, treatment plans with measurable goals, mental status examinations, risk assessments and safety plans, and diagnoses in DSM-5-TR and ICD-10 terms. Best EHR for Behavioral Health Group Practices

The EHR that worked fine solo doesn't automatically work once you add a second clinician. A group practice, say an LCSW, an LPC and a psychiatrist or PMHNP under one roof, has three needs a solo practice doesn't.

Multiple license types on staff. A therapist's progress note and a prescriber's medication-management note are built differently, with different fields, language and billing codes. One template forced onto both serves neither. Look for separate, purpose-built templates for each license type on one platform, and, if you have prescribers, e-prescribing with EPCS as an add-on rather than a second system.

Best EHR for LCSWs and Clinical Social Workers

Most "best EHR" lists are written for therapists who only do private-pay talk therapy. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker's work is broader, and it changes what the software has to do.

Case management lives next to clinical notes. Social work blends direct clinical care with coordination: housing referrals, benefits applications, community resources, contact with schools and other providers. An EHR built around one client, one note, one invoice leaves the case-management half of the job in a spreadsheet. Documentation is the biggest time drain in therapy, and AI note-taking has become the main reason therapists switch EHRs. Two things matter more than the feature list: where the note ends up, and where the data goes.

Privacy first. Any tool that touches client information must sign a Business Associate Agreement.
